When it comes down to it, the Flames from 2007-2013 just weren't very good. We had maybe a couple seasons between 07 and 09 with Langkow and Huselius/Cammalleri/Tanguay (particularly 08/09 when a bunch of players were injured just before the playoffs), but overall the team was constructed poorly, gave up tons of assets for bottom six forwards or bottom pairing defencemen, and never had any help coming through the pipeline.

Yeah, the issues that this team faced back then and are facing today are pretty similar.
The team is just not good enough. There's not enough talent, and there's certainly not enough high-end talent. The moment you start looking for intangibles/unquantifiable magic team ju ju, you know you've lost perspective. This team was just not built well enough to compete at the top of the league. No magic mixture is going to fix it. It's a lack of talent, and no team is out there giving talent away for free.
(That 08/09 season featured the strongest team the Flames have had in the modern era, and injuries just destroyed them.)
