There's the potential that this season doesn't go well and you can move him for more than that at the deadline.
Add in he's the captain and could coast to coast in the jersey and it's easily worth a third round pick.

If Gus was worth a 3rd round pick, Gio full year rental worth far more than that. But difference is cap space that losing Gio creates.
I was OK with giving up even a 2nd rounder but after a couple of days reflection, I think it’s just time to let it go. Great contract for the Flames and this is the year that money is better spent elsewhere. Gio declined last year and I expect it will continue.
