It would be awesome to have all that cap space, but I think the timing of losing that 6.75 might be better next year.
If they allocate that money in UFA and replace Gio, it's going to have term and to get a player of Gio's level, you are overpaying for him to be here. I am thinking about a guy like Martinez. I think you can get that guy on a 4 year deal at 5 mil, but then regret it later.
If Gio stays, you get to transfer that money to Gaudreau/Tkachuk raises assuming they're here. If that is done correctly, it is pretty clean living cap wise.
Having Mange, Gaudreau and Tkachuk to re-sign when you just handed out 10s of millions of UFA dollars the year before could be a bad spot. I guess it all just depends on what they do tradewise in the next week.
Overall though, if you got an opportunity to keep Gio with a spend of a couple of B level assets, I would do it no question. Doesn't sound like that will be an option.
