If you are a player with a big ticket and you're not playing up to that level, teams making a deal are going to demand compensation for the gap. Take our own Matthew Tkachuk. His performance last season was well below what you expect of a $7M player. He repeats that and he becomes a bit of financial problem. Then add in his qualifying offer into the mix, and that young stud player may not be quite as attractive. He really needs to step his game up this season or he could be a young player that becomes a negative value contract if the team tries to move him.

Partially true but age does matter. A Tkachuk has a chance of turning his career around. A guy like Neal or Lucic has zero chance. The older they get the less .
