They got a roster and a half worth of what was supposed to be below-average NHL talent. Every team protected either 9 or 11 of its best players, and first- and second-year pros were automatically exempt. Some teams were so bad they didn't have an NHL-quality player to expose – remember Griffin Reinhart?
The Golden Knights should have had a roster full of journeymen with absolutely no stars. They did a whole lot better than anyone had a right to expect, and they did it because so many of the GMs made huge errors – remember Shea Theodore?
