When I say losing Gio makes the Flames worse, what I mean is the Flames don’t have another defenseman who can log 27 minutes a night and play in all situations. Gio is the team’s best overall defenseman and unless the Flames can pick up a comparable dman some where, Gio’s absence will hurt the team.
Obviously from an asset management point of view, it makes perfect sense to expose Gio over the other 3. I also take it from what Lebrun was hearing that the Flames may have entertained the idea of trading Noah Hanifin, but if he was only receiving pennies on the dollars, then yes it probably ultimately made more sense to just lose Gio and find a suitable replacement (i.e. Suter).
