From what I see, Gio is someone who has been a leader in the locker room, a captain, and has a strong calming effect. He has a lot of value on this team. Sure, maybe he is a bit over-paid, but for how long he’s been a valuable asset, Flames still come out ahead.
I’d hate to lose him, but it’s probably going to happen and for good reason. My only hope is that there is someone mature enough to fill his captaincy role. I see what McDavid is doing in garbageville, and he clearly was not ready. McDavid is not a natural leader, and needs help with that role. The problem is none of their players can handle that responsibility.
If we end up losing Gio, it is what it is, but I am a little concerned in about hat comes next and how they are going to try and fill not only his on ice position, but his leadership role as well.
