And I'm honestly still curious how Tanev's contract plays out. I would surmise the vast majority of this site had him breaking into pieces after two years and having the Flames on the hook for his last two years as a face palm.

I would guess the Flames view Tanev as an controlled asset for 3 years
Gio however at his age and current contract. They have no control.
Decision, I would think was an easy one. (Tanev is protected, Gio is not)
However, I am not surprised Flames are trying to think of all options (i.e. can they find a way to keep Gio)
