Are guys like Haula, Zajac, Brassard, Perreault, Janmark, Dzingel or Bozak still unsigned? If so, just sign some of them for pennies on the dollar. And I really mean pennies. And short term. Low risk. Keep the cap flexibility for next year.
These guys may be washed up, but they would produce more on the bottom lines than players like Nordstrom, Rinaldo and Simon ever would. Several of them could play on the middle lines if it worked.
The league has a lot of parity. Games are close. The Flames struggle to score goals. If the third and fourth lines can actually chip in while not being overpaid, that could make a big difference. Heck, re-sign Ryan, since he's basically one of those guys.

The Flames followed the pennies on the dollar strategy last year with Simon, Nordstrom, Lievo. Either a huge flaw in professional scouting and evaluation or Calgary is not a destination for penny on the dollar players.
They did better on PTO in the past with Rieder and Versteeg. With real training camp and exhibition games maybe the bottom of the line up does not have to be set in the summer. Might be a chance for Pelletier, Zary, or Gadwin to show they belong ahead of other teams failed projects.
