It may be confusing for you, but two things can be true at the same time and actually do make logical sense.
1) The Flames can only protect three defencemen, and Giordano isn't a reasonable choice to be one of the three.
2) Every other team (except Vegas) can also only protect three defencemen, and if they trade for Giordano, they either have to lose him for nothing or expose one of their current top 3.
Tell us, who in their right mind is going to trade for Giordano's rights before the expansion draft?
