It would be in the Flames best interests that Seattle take Gio.
It is a salary dump
Thank goodness they haven't ask for a 2nd round pick in order to take him.
The 6.75 M in cap space is a tangible asset.
Sure the Oilers made an mistake taking on 11M in cap and 3.6 M in actual salary for Keith over 2 years and not getting a 2nd or 3rd coming their way . But the Flames look like they can get rid of Gio's 6.750 cap hit AND salary by letting the Kraken pick him. Should be no second thoughts. Take the win.
Is there anyone any where that think that Gio is a 6.75 M player? If the Flames want to keep him they should extend his contract for a couple of years a 5M per year.
The idea that the Flames will trade him at the TDL? Absurd.
The Flames were a bubble team with likely a 50% chance of making the playoffs when they kept Brodie. How far out would the Flames have to be out of contention and how bad would Gio be playing for the Flames to trade him at TDL?
If Gio is playing at a level that other teams would want him for a playoff rental the Flames would be within 8-10 points of a wild card spot and the Flames would almost certainly keep him.
The only possible reason to take extraordinary measures to keep Gio would be that the Flames are counting on the laws of probability reverting to the norm and Gio getting 20 playoff games this season.
As it stands he would be have the lowest number of playoff games of any post expansion era players to be considered for the HOF
