From the perspective of the expansion draft, the forwards would cancel each other out and it would free up a defence protection spot for Gio. The other team would have to have a spare protection spot on defence for something like that to work. I don't know if there are very many teams that have both a forward who would be worth that type of package deal from the Flames and who also has only 2 defencemen worth protecting.
I guess another option would be to move one of those d-men for either a draft pick or a young player who is exempt from the expansion draft.

Maybe it's as simple as one protected defender or Gio for a forward. Then exposing the current 7th forward with the following protected: Monahan, Gaudreau, Lindholm, Tkachuck, Mangiapane and one of Backlund or Dube and the new player.
Also a package of Gio+Dube probably gets you a pretty good player.
