Here it is: If Gio really wants to stay a Flame for his entire career, couldn't he simply say that he'll retire if Seattle picks him in the expansion draft? He is at the perfect age for people to not legitimately question a statement like that.
This seems like a simple way to "protect" 7-4 instead of 7-3 and if Tampa can get away with icing a team like that in the playoffs I'm not sure anyone would bat an eye at the Flames.
Maybe I'm unaware of some kind of rule that's in place to prevent this?

I think the league would force the flames to protect him and expose someone else. Not sure it would work the same as Perry in this situation.
