Why does a hockey player ever need to crosscheck someone? When is it ever a hockey play?

If a defender is in a position where they NEED to crosscheck another player in order to prevent a scoring chance its because they are out of position. Too bad, so sad.
This.

And this. It's simple: you can use your hockey stick to play [or try to play] the puck. That's it, that's all.

In scrums or in front of the net, you can still push and fight for position with your hands (without holding), but it would become more about body position and maintaining a strong base.
