Cossa's stats during his draft year and the two prior years:
2019: 2.23 GAA and 92.1%
2020: 1.57 GAA and 94.1%
2021: 1.57 GAA and 94.1%
By the way, he's 6'6. And the Oil Kings have a track record of success with goalies at the NHL level.
Mason McDonald's stats during his draft year and the prior year (only played 1 prior year):
2012: 4.72 GAA and 88.5%
2013 (Acadie-Bathurst Titan): 3.57 GAA and 88.7%
2013 (Charlottetown Islanders): 3.35 GAA and 90.7% (this ended up being his best season in his entire career)
It's hard not to like Cossa's numbers. For McDonald, we had to do some major mental gymnastic to justify the pick. He was athletic, ranked highly, and showed signs of improvement. But at the end of the day, goaltending largely comes down to save percentage. And McDonald never, at any point, had a good save percentage.
To be fair, McDonald went 34th, so obviously he'd be worse than a projected 1st round goalie like Cossa. I'm undecided, but I might be in the minority that thinks Cossa could be a better prospect than Jesper Wallstedt. But the things Wallstedt has done at his age is very impressive.

With McDonald there were two goaltenders debated and pretty much even in the rankings ... the Flames got the wrong one.
But his save percentage isn't the stat to focus on when he's coming out of the Q. Just like gawdy offensive numbers for forwards, their goalies face a lot of offence.
He was 7th in the league in his +1 year at 18-19.
