If you tell the player before you’ve officially decided the direction and don’t buy them out you just end up angering a player you end up keeping. Same way you don’t tell a player you intend to trade them until the trade is official.

So if Gio gets exposed in the expansion draft and the Kraken don't pick him is he going to be angered? No because the team discussed it with him and players understand the business. I would think if Treliving was looking at buying out Lucic say next offseason that he gives him a call and gives him the heads up as that's what a GM with some class would do.
