First of all, Backlund is a top-6 player on the Flames, but he’s a third-line checking, two-way C on a contender, who can chip in 40 pts. Sutter is grooming him for the third line now, too. How many first overall picks have you seen with 3rd line C as their floor? That kind of floor is exactly WHY a guy like Svechkov is going in the middle of the first, instead of first overall, because he’s likely to be closer to his floor than his ceiling. The teams that think he can be a top-line player have him ranked higher. You never hear about guys like MacKinnon having the potential to end up as a 3rd liner.
