That might have been a viable strategy in the pre-fed era. Once Sampras got a break, he'd be uninterested in the other players next service games. He knew that once he breaks, his service game is good enough to win. So he conserved energy.
Now a days, you have to fight for every game. Maintain your rhythm and don't tank. Rafa especially was relentless in keeping the pressure on.
If Berettini wants to be a top tier player, he'll need to fight for every point and trust his fitness.
