RHD Daniil Sobolev,6'0"198lbs (MHK Spartak Moskva,MHL) 2019-20: 48gp/2g/4a/6pts,47PIM. Did not play this year, as he was committed to play for Windsor of the OHL, but was a very noticeable presence as a 16/17 year-old in the MHL. Sobolev has a well-rounded game-he's good at everything, perhaps not elite, but he's the kind of heart-and-soul player you win with. Terrific skater and stickhandler, he can get up to top-speed almost instantly, and has good edges and agility. He's become bigger than the 5'10"154lbs that he's usually listed at.
Good hockey sense and composure, he's slick and shifty. Excellent vision, and shows good offensive awareness-he also flashes game-breaking skill, and a highly advanced offensive game. Excellent passing game, and exhibits good puck distribution, and reception. Makes beautiful outlet passes while still evading the incoming forecheck, which facilitates the team's transition. Often initiates zone-entry, pushing the play forward with his puck-moving ability, or by leading the attack himself. He has a fine array of passes he can use, including a nice saucer off his backhand. He's also got a very hard, heavy shot.
Maybe best of all of his attributes is his heart and grit. He sacrifices his body for the team to make plays-he blocks shots regularly, and plays a hard, heavy game. Does whatever it takes to win. Forces opponents to the boards, often rubbing them out. Battles hard to protect his goalie, clears the crease, and sticks up for teammates. He's built like a tank, and hits like a truck-he's ultra-aggressive, battles hard in the trenches, and isn't afraid to play the role of agitator. He's a rock in his zone, and his offensive numbers take a back seat to his defensive responsibility. Keeps good gaps, and works hard in 50/50 confrontations.
With Sobolev, he has an offensive game that just needs time to grow-we may have seen some good numbers this year out of him if the OHL was playing, as he has a full toolkit. There are times when he takes himself out of the play, looking for a big hit, so he'll need to be taught when to go, and when to wait. He has a solid, thick build, but needs to get stronger to survive at the next level, and win more puck battles-he can still get pushed off the puck by larger players. Sobolev projects as a solid, 2nd pairing fan-favorite-his game is somewhat reminicent of Darius Kasparaitus. 3rd/4th round.
