Default 2021 NHL Draft

This is such a unique draft. For the last two years, we’ve all been told that this draft isn’t very good when compared to the recent previous ones and the next two drafts after it are considered much better than this one as well.

Yet, it’s funny how perspectives change - at least amongst media and fans - as we get closer to the draft. And this happens every year. Every single player taken in the first round is compared to star players in the NHL - even so far as to be projected to be just like that player. For example, if he has a good two-way game… sportsnet says he’s comparable to Bergeron - the best two way player of the last decade.

Yet only a fraction of them ever reach that potential and fewer still exceed it. For a draft that was considered to be weak… people are now talking about future first line centermen being available with picks outside the top ten. I know it’s hard to project players this young - especially after the last 2 years - but it always feels like draft picks are coveted even more during this time of year. 2 months later, that same player having been drafted at 12th overall probably wouldn’t get you a pick in the top 20 to 30 of the next draft - and that goes for any year.

Curious that a player like Zary, who most thought would go in the top 10 to 15 in the 2020 draft, is considered a lesser skilled prospect now than a guy like Sillinger who is projected to go in this draft around the same spot as Zary was projected last year. Even though this is considered a weaker draft and last year’s was considered a strong, deep draft.
