For the Kucherov example you need (a) a star player with (b) a serious injury/surgery that at least can be estimated for the whole season to rehab, (c) you have to make the POs even without that player and (d) he has to actually come back and make a difference in the POs.

A rule change would put teams in a real bind when facing a serious injury to a player. Do they not replace him and possibly toss the season on the chance they’d have some sort of severe penalty if the recovery goes really well?
