They do have the "Evil Morty" arch, which I'm assuming will tie into an explanation for why Rick was missing for 20 years.

The show has been devoted 1-2 episodes per season to this.

I kind of like the way they are doing this. You get the best of both worlds. A great arch, that they slowly tease out, and not every episode is bogged down by increasingly derivative plot exposition. The main focus of the show is comedy, and the one-off episodes allow the writers to explore this. I really like the "evil Morty" episodes but they're also very heavy.

It's a similar formula to Adventure Time, which was one of my favorites too.
