As we enter the Stanley Cup semi-finals, I decided to compile the various posts in this thread to try to crowd source who is the best player in the game.
I used a reverse rank scale so a #1 vote was worth 10 points, a #2 was 9 and so on downwards.
It was a bit tough as not everyone did a straight top five list (including myself who had a few different players "tied" in my #5 spot.).
Some posters made references to their picks in comments rather than in a ranked list so I debated how to handle this and other similar issues - only give everyone five votes? Split points for players ranked as tied or give each the same value (eg. if someone said MacKinnon and McDavid were tied in their view, should they both get 10 points or 5 each?)
So that's a long way to say this is not the most scientifically rigorous study (probably also a few human errors in my transcription on top of everything!)
But here's what I found:
#1 - MacKinnon (260 vote points)
#2 - McDavid (203 vote points)
#3 - Crosby (192 vote points)
#4 - Matthews (97 vote points)
#5 - Kucherov (80 vote points)
#6 - Bergeron (62 vote points)
#7 - Hedman (47 vote points)
#8 - Panarin (40 vote points)
#9 - Kane (36 vote points)
#10 - Barkov (20 vote points)
#11 - Marchand (19 vote points)
#12 - Ovechkin (18 vote points)
#13 - Draisital (12 vote points)
...then a whole bunch of players with less than 10 points who only got 1-2 low ranked mentions.
