That is incorrect. Reagan appointee Mark Fowler killed the Fairness Doctrine, which required news bureaus to provide accurate information and equal time to the opposite political view point. Nixon's administration originally targetted the media, and the neo-conservative strategists figured that if the Fairness Doctrine disappeared that they would be more effective in spreading their message through a highly managed, and extremely well financed, organization of media voices. With the end of the fairness doctrine, the advent of cable news and the internet, the strategists found the medium for their message. This has been a very slow and deliberate execution of a tactical plan, covering some 30 years, key in promoting their political ideology.
