This season was never intended to be a season they go for the play-offs in. That all starts next season. There's a reason they never addressed the starting pitching line up going into the year. The hope was one or two of the young arms would step in when called up and just never leave. Obviously Pearson was the expectation but if Manoah is that guy, then Manoah is that guy.

I don't think anyone expected to see MVP numbers from Vladdy or for Semien to pay off so huge, so I think some people are getting a little antsy like this is a team at the end of it's rope ala 2016/2017 and not a team thats rope is just starting.
I don't think anyone is getting antsy, everyone understands that this is a young team that is still in assembly mode, not win-now mode.

And yes, the long term plan was that this was another building year, with the eye on next year as really turning the corner. It is important (and SOP) to have a long term focus on team construction.

However, you also have to be flexible, and recognize that development doesn't always follow the schedule - sometimes it takes longer, and sometimes it happens quicker. And success is fleeting - if you are having a great year, you need to try and take advantage of that.

Do they mortgage the future for this year? Of course not - that would be a fire-able offence. But if the team continues to play well, and they are still competing for a playoff spot as we move through June, then management owes it to them to get some support and give them a fighting chance to compete.

Don't mortgage the future, but nothing develops champions like winning.
