If there was a year to make that move 2019 appeared to be it. Stone was exactly the player the Flames needed at the time (and still need). Using hindsight it was a bullet that was dodged as I do not believe Stone changes the outcome of that Avs series anyway and likely would have walked in the summer

Yup don't trade for Hamonic, and don't have the Neal/Brouwer contracts hurting your cap, and you have the draft capital/prospects and the cap space needed to go after a big piece like Stone.
Issue is Flames kept using their capital and cap space on pieces that didn't move the needle.
