A Stone trade and sign would have been very tough to do unless the Sens took Neal or the Flames were prepared to trade another core piece for futures as the cap squeeze was real that summer.
Had the Flames not signed Neal they likely could have packaged Frolik with Valimaki and our 1st for Stone and made the money work if Stone had any interest signing here

I wonder if Treliving could go back in time if he makes the trade as I feel the team may have overestimated Valimaki's ceiling at that time. I think Valimaki is still going to be a solid top 4 defenseman but I think the organization felt he was going to be the heir apparent to Gio.
