If you can trade Backlund, you trade him. You try to get futures or at least an expiring contract but they have to get out from that contract. If Seattle selects him you think of it as a trade for cap space, then try to sign someone to a 1 year deal with that space and trade them at the deadline.

Why do people want to keep so much of this team intact? It isn't a good team. It's not even an ok team. This is a bad team and needs to be changed. The fans seem to fall in love with their own players and think every team should be giving up assets for guys that would likely clear waivers. At this point, i honestly think Backlund would clear waivers but not because he isn't good but because he's 32 and has 3 more years at over 5 million per. He plays on the second line and shouldn't, he's better suited as a third line player. Tampa couldn't give Tyler Johnson away and he's 2 years younger, makes less and is a better player. If you think a team would claim Backlund, tell me who and why because I can't think of a team that would take him. That's why you want Seattle to take him, obviously you shop him and try to get assets for him but I honestly don't think you can. If they take him, try to sign Krijci or another UFA to 1 year deal then trade them for assets then trade Gio at the deadline for assets. Play prospects and try to develop kids, they can't really do much worse than the Flames did this year.
