I take Backlund along with every other players numbers this year with a large grain of salt both good and bad. Playing against the same teams night in and night out is why McDavid was able to hit 100 points in a 56 game schedule. Backlund is slowing down and it’s only a matter of time his slow starts don’t pick up by the mid season where all of a sudden he’s producing at a near point per game clip to finish out. He’s not a necessarily a physically imposing player as well so it becomes harder to slot him into the bottom 6 and checking roles as he slows down. It’s tough to let pieces go for ‘nothing’ but we gain 5.35 mill in space for the next 3 seasons for ‘free’ if Seattle ended up taking Backlund which is definitely something.
