Well no argument from me that it is the right thing to do.
I don't really agree that raising taxes not a ballot box issue, I really think it is. But IMO the bigger point is, every dollar spent is crucial (ignoring the obscene waste at the government level) and often they look to spend it in areas where there is a political return.
You're suggesting the should ignore this consideration, which I agree with. But we shouldn't ignore the tragic political reality raised by the poster.
