My house would be a hodge podge of uncomfortable temperatures everywhere I went if I didn't do that. Last house was three stories and current house is just a bungalow, but by messing around with opening and closing vents I'm in perfect even-temperature comfort everywhere I go.
I'm sure if your goal is to have your hvac system last 30 years then having free-flowing air is healthier for it. My goal is to be comfortable and if I cut a few years off the life of my furnace fan I don't really care.
Not saying you're wrong at all with pointing out you've read it could create extra wear and tear. I appreciate knowing that.
