Just change the definition of "Major Professional League" to include the AHL, KHL, SHL, Liiga, etc. and then raise the cutoff for games to 80 for skaters (keep it where it is for goalies). Then if you've played more than 1 full season of pro hockey somewhere else before getting to the NHL, you're not a rookie. Problem solved.

This was our discussion during Stone v. Gaudreau for the Calder. Stone had played 2 full seasons of pro and had 23 NHL games before his "rookie" season. Plus some NHL PO games. Gaudreau had 1 NHL "last game of the season" game. Of course, then Ekblad won it as an 18 year old right out of junior and made it a moo point.
