But yes, as Pepsifree said, I couldnt care less about cars; but i get why people like them. Same with clothes - it's easy to see why people enjoy dressing well.
IMHO, when someone says they like my coat or my outfit or something like that, it is far better than someone liking my car. My car was purchased from one of few companies. The only barrier at that point is capital - within reason. Clothing is much more of a personal thing. If someone likes what you put together then it feels great
One of the few great feelings you can get is when a person (who isn't hitting on you) says "hey thats a great jacket, or i like that look)

That's a humungous misunderstanding of car culture. Shows huge ignorance (not in the mean way; I'm clearly ignorant about fashion). It's not like the guy with the most expensive car wins. There's so much more to it.
The way you describe the compliment on your clothes is exactly how I feel when I get a compliment on a car I've worked on. I remember my old boss getting into my '91 Passat wagon in like 2002 and saying, "we're paying you too much if you can drive this." She thought it was new. Nope, 10 years old, but I just kept it looking like a million bucks and only paid $9k for it.
Spending an afternoon putting in a strut-tower brace, short-throw shifter, whatever on a car is bliss. Then driving it and feeling the improved characteristics is really fun. Or even just upgrading an old stereo into one with bluetooth, adding a sub, swapping out the speakers...giving an old car a stereo superior to most things you can buy from the manufacturer is really fun. There are a billion ways to make your car unique. Like fashion, you can go totally overboard and make it look like trash, you can keep it fairly stock
looking if that's your thing, or you can take a plain and boring older car and inject new life into it with some elbow grease.
It just has nothing to do with buying your way to a cool car, although there are those guys, too.
