Yes he is a bit undersized but he doesnt play that way at all. He gets engaged, mucks about in the front of the net at times, and certainly will battle along the boards. Those things along with his agility/shiftiness allow him to compete with the big boys.
Its the one huge knock on Gaudreau....as talented as he is with the puck, what he does away from it and to gain possession of it just isn't that good.

Mangiapane is more like St. Louis than Gaudreau. He's a mucker and will go to the dirty areas. He still needs to improve his lower body strength, or put blades on his knees, but he's really surprising and earning his keep on the top lines. I think they can survive with a "small guy" like Mangiapane up there with Gaudreau. Just keep them separated.
