Okay, Cliff. Sometimes people just want to know what time it is. When theatres open up again, go to one, and see how many different people in the audience check their phone for the time, text, or email. Without putting in any effort, I could come up with about 50 reasons for wanting to know the time. Movie started late, you have to pick your kids up at school, doctor's appointment is upcoming, movie sucks, you have a curfew, boyfriend went to the bathroom and hasn't come back in a really long time, want to know how long it's been since you last checked the time, just want to know, etc.
You could replace theatre in your post with almost any scenario. Who needs to check the time at work? Get a more interesting job! Who needs to check the time at a restaurant? Get better food! Who needs to check the time at the Saddledome? Cheer for a better team!
