With the chance to play with McDavid, how do the Oilers not manage to sign big UFAs?
Self-deprecation is a start aka "the Edmonton tax."

The organization blames the city because, it couldn't possibly be the groupthink entitled culture that Lowe learned from Sather, and perpetuated into Katz for all of eternity.

No. Not that. It's the cold.

Winnipeg could be viewed as a worse city for a highly paid pro athlete, but much like the Jets organization, they're more preoccupied about being themselves. The Jets draft and develop well. I think this is part of why they have their farm team in the city. Familarize players with the city and strengthen connections.

They retain talent, and make it a safe place for them to play, because they know they're not on the top of many players free agent or trade list.

The Oilers have to and frequently do overpay because of the garbage antics of the organization. Look no further than Ryan Smyth or Sheldon Souray. Yeah these players are long since retired, but their agents or who their agents relayed information to are still active.

They offered David Clarkson more money than the Leafs did. He rejected them.

Trades... well that's kind of the same story. I imagine the Dany Heatley fiasco only adds to their insecurity. The team and the fans worry if a player with status will reject them... again.

Add this to horrifying draft pick asset management and you have McDavid spinning his wheels in the swamp of 80's entitlement.
