As an outsider, I have an opinion on this, and I hope not to offend. But, for various reasons, I can't help but see your Flames as the more disappointing.
1. Failed to qualify for playoffs.
A team can't hoist the Cup if they don't make the tournament, and even a low seed has a chance to be a Cinderella. Your guys fell just short, that other team made it, and, while they did blow it, they had brief (if misguided) hope.
2. Coaching change mid-season.
It is never a good sign when this kind of drastic move is necessary. Moreover, this observer feels that Sutter is a bit of a regressive choice for HC. Dour, conservative, with a prior history with this franchise, and a noted short "sell by" date with personnel, Sutter seems an uninspired choice to lead an NHL team in the decade of the 20s.
3. Unsettled roster, with some under-performance.
All season on CP, I noticed unhappiness and speculation about some of your top players from prior seasons. At times Gaudreau, Monaham, Gio, and others were discussed, in terms of what line should they play, or should they even be moved. Obviously, the fan feeling is the roster needs some kind of overhaul to advance quality of play. Also, another year has ticked off on all their careers. So this indicates, to me, that the disappointment in this squad was deeper than just the failure to advance to the playoffs
Again, just observations from a friendly outsider, here at CP, and I certainly do not intend to be a troll of offend. Wishing for better results in the future for both our squads, (unlike this season, where my guys were sunk by either a lack of experience up and down the forward roster, and a lack of talent up and down the defensive roster.)
