The 2 x Stanley Cup winning coach Darryl Sutter actually promoted Gio from the second pair up to the top pair and started playing him 26-27 minutes a game. That tells me a lot about what Gio still means to this team.
I believe that if Darryl could do it all over again, he probably would’ve made the move earlier. I think the whole “entitlement” term he used the other day was a direct shot at most of the young players on the team along with management for giving the kids the keys to the car too early.

Hasn’t Backlund only had a letter as of this year (not that letters are necessarily indicative of who the real leaders are).
Honestly, no one outside of the team really know what kind of leaders any particular players are. Was Lanny a great leader because they won in 89? Or was the real leader on that team someone like Gilmour or Macinnis?
