I agree with both of these. But more than advertising I would also say the popularity of Molson and the other huge beers is dependent upon availability. You simply don't see the beers from smaller breweries available country wide and internationally. If a beer is only available in a small market it's obviously not going to be competitive with a beer that's covering an international market, so it doesn't say much about quality that the small breweries are not consumed at the same level.

Furthermore, I think most people like to have things that are familiar to them. Molson is an example of a low quality but widely available product that people are familiar with and can find to drink no matter the unfamiliar local. Just look at success of business chains that spread like wildfire, often forcing out smaller local businesses to the chagrin of all the loyal members of those small businesses local markets. I don't think youd probably say that McDonalds is better than your local Mom & Pop burger shack, or a Peters Drive or other such comparable place, but they sure sell a lot more burgers and shut a lot of those little places down.
