All came into the league under Sutter and won 2 Stanley Cups with him. I wouldn't call any of those guys "bruisers".
I don't think it has anything to do with age, it's about balance. The team is missing some grit on the backend.
Mackey was the only defenseman to get into a fight this year. That says the defense isn't physical enough. Did any defenseman throw a bigger hit than the two that Mackey threw against Vancouver?
