But then suggesting Seattle might not take him for free? Not many 26 year old centres who have the potential to score 30 goals will be available in expansion.

Not sure, Monahan has had ~5 fairly major surgeries.
Sure he is young, however will he rebound?
Can he stay healthy?
I heard the media speculate about Monahan awhile ago where the Flames have tried to trade the player (last off season)… However their is not a great return value at this time
