I'd prefer to re-sign him since he's an elite level playmaker that aren't that common around the league, and if you lose him, you gotta have a replacement for the point production that he does, and can bring.

Ideally if Gaudreau can be locked up for long term, then either the Flames already have the players on the roster (Lindholm/Tkachuk) that can play with him, and bring back his point production level to around the 99 point mark he reached a couple years back. Otherwise the next step is trying to bring a high level player in that can compliment him well to do just that.

If he can't be re-signed, then you put him out on the market now and get the best deal you can for him since he would be a hot commodity. Only reason I would trade him although he could be re-signed is if you're getting an elite level centre in return to address a long time organizational need. But it depends on the deal because ideally that's exactly the type of player you want Gaudreau to be playing with. So exchanging other players would be better.

Flames biggest weakness is offense. So moves made this offseason should be work done in improving it, rather than making it worse just for the sake of change. I feel Gaudreau is a key component in improving it, but just needs the right support.
