We wanted to use Shou Sugi Ban on a project but as the quotes come in are thinking about a black paint/stain instead.
I ended up using a black exterior paint. My guess is maybe 5 yrs before repaint? I have one roof pitch and wall that will get the brunt of the exposure and I don't really know how it will hold up. I was considering a stain but the wood was roughsawn and it would have been a pain in the ass to do - paint won out.

I've done a bunch of sugi ban and I do find that when done in exterior fashion you end up with some weathering. If leaving the crocodile skin on I find that high sun exposure will start to flake that layer off. If doing a sugi ban where you scrub off the layer, after a few years the black color starts to fade out leaving you with a tiger stripe of reddish/greying/original burnt black. I like the look but that should be known before going down the sugi ban route.

The best combo for me would be, burn it, scrub it (to gain the texture) then stain or paint for a lasting effect. Feel free to PM me if you want more info.

I used two different treatments. Penofin (timbertown) on the vertical and Sico, a sikkens product (windsor), on the decking. I don't like the Penofin as much as they want you to do it yearly and I find the color fades very quickly and nobody has time for that kind of maintance.

this is the first time I've used the sico and we will see how it turns out.
