C Red Savage, 5'11"181lbs (USDP): Son of Brian Savage. Here's a guy we would instantly love. Let me first say that I didn't do a U-18 write-up on him, as nobody on the US team really wowed me (except Pastujov)-could be my mistake. Savage was the Captain of that team, putting up only 1 goal in 5 games.
Savage is known for his elite two-way acumen, and has been called one of the best two-way guys in this draft. He plays for a rather porous U18 team that relies on heavily outscoring their opponents to win, but Savage has been said to be worth the other 5 guys on the ice when he's out there defensively. He breaks up plays with aplomb, and dominates the opponent in his end-and is often the key to the breakout up the ice, and the set-up in the O zone. 46gp/18g/24a/42pts, 39 PIMs-not the high totals of a Coronato, Pastujov, or Sillinger, but he's able to create opportunities on offence, and those numbers show that his offence is underrated.
Does everything required to win-blocks shots, wins battles all over the ice, is a workaholic, and has a non-stop motor. Killer on the PK. Models his game after Ryan O'Reilly. Great leader on and off the ice-often QB's the play in all zones. When he was out with a shoulder injury in 2020, he studied books about how to be a good leader, which says something about his character. He has also been called a puck-possession machine, and an aggressive attacker-high IQ, acute vision, and can make something out of nothing in tight spaces. Can beat defenders with his deft stickhandling. Attacks the greasy areas, and plays mean and physical-killer on the boards. Sounds a lot like Mike Peca. Great speed, with agility, edging and acceleration. I watched some of his interviews-kid is pretty articulate, humble, and likeable.
His game is still considered to be in development, so if he keeps working on his offence, he could be a top-6 C, but at worst, you're getting a solid, gritty C for your 3rd line to kill penalties and win faceoffs. Many think he's 3rd/4th round material, but I think he could easily sneak into the 2nd.
