I think it was to give Dawes the opportunity to go where ever he wanted. He was free to sign anywhere after that plus he got some money for it. I don't think the buy out had much impact on the cap overall.
He ended playing only 13 more NHL games, so it's not like Darryl let Martin St. Louis walk.
I'm totally speculating here but maybe there was some reason they needed to get him off the roster.
I wouldn't call it silly without having all the information. There's usually a good reason. They essentially replaced him with Alex Tanguay the next season so that could be it.
Again another example of Darryl Sutter acquiring a small skilled player and giving him an opportunity. Dawes had his best season in Calgary.
