The support/role players held up their end ever since though.
It's all been on the psyche of those 5-6 core guys.
We needed new engine parts. Refused to acknowledge it, ran the thing into the ground. Now we're at the mercy of what the scrap yard will pay for them.
I'd probably make a ####y GM but if I was one I would be proactive about any avenue to prolong my window. Retooling on the fly every couple of years and making those lateral trades that make you a little younger every time. Getting too attached to any player, or pair of players like Mony-Johnny is a dangerous game to play. The only way I stay loyal to guys that long is if they brought me a reasonable amount of playoff success.
They guys have not once showed they have an extra gear when it mattered.
Bonkers to hold out hope for it even 2 years after that Avalanche beating.
