If that deal happened before the expansion draft, Buffalo will have to expose someone like Tage Thompson or Casey Mittlestadt. Losing a recent 1st rounder to expansion probably does not appeal to them.
Any trade that has a net increase in contracts for Buffalo and a 2021 first rounder will have to happen in the week after the expansion draft and prior to the entry draft. It's a pretty small window and I doubt Buffalo is going to let themselves get cornered by a deadline for possibly the most important transaction they will make in a generation.
I think any deal for Eichel is going to happen after the draft and include multiple firsts, likely 2022 and 2023 picks.
