Keep trading 1st and 2nd round picks for real NHLers.

Here are Pittsburgh’s 1st round picks since they drafted Sidney Crosby.

-Jordan Staal - helped them win a cup, traded for Brandon Sutter and Brian Dumoulin - won 2 cups). Sutter would be traded to Vancouver for Nick Bonino and Adam Clendening. Bonino would be 4th in team scoring during their 2nd championship.

-Angelo Esposito - traded for Marian Hossa and Pascal Dupuis

-Simon Despres - traded for Ben Lovejoy (won Cup)

-Beau Bennett - didn’t play enough games in 2015-16 to get his name on the cup, subsequently dealt to New Jersey.

-Joe Morrow - traded to Dallas for Brendan Morrow

-Derrick Pouliot - traded to Canucks for scraps

-Olli Maata - won 2 cups

-Kasperi Kapanen - traded for Phil Kessel, subsequently traded back to Pittsburgh

-Samuel Poulin - still in the system.

The Penguins have drafted their own selection nine times since Sid joined the team, and only two of those players actually helped them win something.

You’ll notice Everyone but Staal and Kapanen are nobodies (to a lesser extent, Maata)

The 1st round picks they gave up have turned into:

Rodion Amirov (2020 - traded for Kapanen)
K’Andre Miller (2018)
Klim Kostin (2017 - traded for Ryan Reaves)
Sam Steel (2016 - traded for Kessel - won 2 Cups)
Matt Barzal (2015 via Edmonton - traded for David Perron)
Morgan Klimchuk (2013 - traded for Jarome Iginla)
Daultan Leville (2008 - traded for Marian Hossa and Pascal Dupuis)

All that adds up to

-15 straight playoff appearances.
-20 playoff rounds won.
-3 Stanley Cups

Pittsburgh owes all three of their championships to prioritizing winning the Stanley Cup instead of the draft - they had five 1st round picks between 2009 and 2012 and never made it out of the 2nd round.

They start trading 1sts ++ in 2013 and go Conference Finals, 2nd round, 1st round, Championship, Championship.

We talk all the time about not tanking because of the bad message it sends. The inverse is true.

Draft picks are for ####ing losers.
You’re allowed to do whatever you want when you have Crosby, Malkin and Fleury.

Where were they drafted?
