To me Treliving was okay at the early stages of what should have been a rebuild.
His RFA signings, and drafting (with the picks we have was strong), and I think he was a good GM for the "Building" stage. He also made strong "seller" type of deals early on with the moves of Hudler, Glencross, and Russell, and even moved a guy like Sven at the right time getting decent value in return.
The problems started when we started trying to rush the building "Stage" and started taking more "shots" with more short sighting win now moves.
Brouwer
Neal
Hamonic
Elliott
Those were the short sighted "Win Now" moves he made, where he tried to add more experience and grit to a team that he thought needed that grit and leadership. And that was where him and his pro-scouting team really failed. And the problem was he was mortgaging too much of the future, especially in terms of 2nd and 3rd round picks to get that done.
Then since we were in "win-now" mode he didn't make the moves he probably should have been making for long term success and held on to Brodie, Hamonic instead of selling them (part of that is COVID/Injury related too), and should have maybe sold earlier on Monahan (and maybe Gaudreau - although we have the benefit of hindsight there).
