If you compare the Flames right now when it comes to contracts, cap situation, age, prospects and picks we are slowly slipping near the bottom of the league. Not good enough to beat the aging teams but nowhere near as loaded as most of the teams at the bottom.

I usually peg 1 or 2 teams every year as the worst team to be a fan of right now (moving forward not including past success). IMO it's San Jose at the bottom. They have some bad contracts and are very old team. Not many prospects that jump out at you either.

Detroit was down there for a few years but I might take their franchise over ours now.

Ottawa was too over the last couple years but they may be ahead of us now too.

Arizona might be the worst right now right there with SJ. We aren't near as bad as these teams but we are getting close if we don't shake things up
Detroit has a clear direction and a great GM, they're in a way better spot than us.

Ottawa is way ahead of us now even with their horrible owner. I'd rather watch a bunch of young talent scrap than some mediocre vets flounder around.

Arizona is the clear worst no question.

SJ went all-in on the Karlsson-Burns-Couture-Pavelski core in 2018-2019 and flamed out. You have to respect them for trying. Since then they're clearly in a rebuilding mode, turning Goodrow into a first, Dillon into 2nds and 3rds, Marleau into a 3rd, and getting a bunch of picks just for retaining salary this deadline. They're old and bad but at least the GM and owner recognize that and are turning it around.
